WHAT ABOUT DICK?
A comedy by Tony and Drama Desk Award Winning playwright Eric Idle, ex-Python and creator of Spamalot. When he first tried out his play What About Dick? at the Montalban Theater in 2007 with the extraordinary cast of Eddie Izzard, Billy Connolly, Tim Curry, Jane Leeves, Tracey Ullman and Jim Piddock, he thought he had the perfect comedy dream cast. In 2012, Eric Idle reassembled this same cast and added Russell Brand and Sophie Winkleman who performed What About Dick? live for four nights at the Orpheum Theater downtown LA.
What About Dick? an emotion picture for radio, set between 1910 and eight o’clock, tells the story of Dick (Russell Brand) who is studying gynecology at Oxford, his two cousins Emma, (Jane Leeves) an emotionally challenged English girl, her kleptomaniac sister Helena (Sophie Winkleman) and their dipsomaniac Aunt Maggie (Tracey Ullman) who live in a large, rambling, Edwardian novel in Kensington. When the Reverend Whoopsie (Tim Curry) discovers a piano on a beach a plot is set afoot that can be solved only by a private Dick, an incomprehensible Scottish sleuth Inspector McGuffin (Billy Connolly) who with the aid of Sergeant Ken Russell (Jim Piddock) finally reveals the identity of the Houndsditch Mutilator.
Described as Oscar Wilde on acid, like Downton Abbey only much worse, What About Dick? begins with the birth of the personal vibrator, invented in Shagistan in 1898 by Deepak Obi Ben Kingsley (Eddie Izzard), and tells the story of the decline of the British Empire as seen through the eyes of a piano.
Eric Idle appears in his own play as The Narrator and John Du Prez plays the Piano, with six new songs from the award winning duo who brought you Spamalot.
What About Dick? is available to watch on Netflix!
